Types of Bricks
There are various types of bricks used in masonry, including common or facing, concrete, engineering and fire bricks. No matter what type of brick you select, there is a variety of sizes, colours, textures and shapes available for you to use on your project. We will walk you through your options.
Railway sleepers and half-rounded timbers perform equally as well as bricks particularly when used as a low retaining wall for a flower bed. Sleepers can not only provide a rustic wall they also double as a seating area.
Considerations for Wall Projects
There are many different options for the design and construction of interior and exterior walls. Choosing the wrong type of wall may not provide sufficient restraint, may be impractical to construct and may undermine the stability of connected structures. At CR Building & Small Works, we're committed to adequately factoring the use and role of the structure into its planning. That's why we offer help and support every step of the way.
Building for wind resistance. The most critical consideration when designing a freestanding wall is to make sure that it is adequate to resist severe gusts of wind. For walls no more than two metres in height there are simple guides that provide adequately stable construction.
Local building requirements. You do not need to apply for planning permission for repairs, maintenance or minor improvements, such as repointing boundary walls. However you may need to make a planning application if you want to:
- build something new
- make a change to your building such as an extension or a change to its appearance
- change the use of all or part of your building
We can provide advice to those considering proposals that may require planning permission or a related consent.
Durability and initial cost. Keep in mind that differences in initial cost may not seem quite as dramatic when weighed against the expected life span of the wall.
Combined functions. Wall systems that combine structure with finish have many advantages over alternative solutions and should be seriously considered.
Dry Stone Walling
Widely recognised as a traditional characteristic of Britain's countryside, dry stone walls are unique in that they are constructed without binding substances such as mortar or concrete. The traditional method involves interlocking the stones, ensuring that it is done in such a way that the wall holds itself up without additional assistance. Historically, dry stone walls were used as a means of field division – miles of these walls can be seen stretched across the countryside. These walls, often centuries old, sometimes require repair or periodic maintenance.
Increasingly, however, dry stone walling is being used for a variety of masonry work. For example new walling, building of Cotswold style properties, landscaping projects and interior, external and exterior stone cladding. That's where we can help.
As dry stone walling specialists, CR Building & Small Works we can provide you with a wide range of drystone walling and natural stone walling services, from repairs and maintenance to new walling.

Chris came and built us a garden wall out of reclaimed bricks in place of a chicken wire fence. Chris completed the job in a day like he said he would and to a very high standard. He removed all rubbish from site. We are definitely going to recommend him to others and would use him again for any further projects.
